She Loves Me

A tender, beautifully crafted musical, She Loves Me brings together the talents of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick—best known for Fiddler on the Roof—with a book by Joe Masteroff of Cabaret fame. The show earned five Tony nominations when it debuted in 1964, and its later productions have been showered with acclaim: the 1993 Broadway revival picked up the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, and the Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. Most recently, the 2016 revival captured the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design, edging out Hamilton. Often celebrated as one of the most delightful musicals ever created, She Loves Me blends heartfelt romance, gentle humor, and a nostalgic European charm. Its source material—Miklos Laszlo’s play Parfumerie—has inspired several adaptations, including the beloved modern classic You’ve Got Mail.
The story unfolds in a quaint 1930s European perfume shop, where clerks Amalia and Georg clash at nearly every turn. Unbeknownst to them, both have secretly answered the same “lonely hearts” newspaper ad, and the anonymous letters they exchange become the emotional center of their lives. As their written bond deepens, they remain blissfully unaware of each other’s true identities. Follow their journey as missteps, misunderstandings, and unexpected revelations eventually guide them toward discovering who their hearts have belonged to all along.
This production of She Loves Me is directed by Marje Tracy of the Steamboat Spring’s Actor’s Studio. The very talented cast is made up members of the community with Amalia being played by the lovely Beira Lawrence, George portrayed by Michael Vandervender fresh from his role of Rolf in The Sound of Music, which was performed at Strings last spring. Gretta Wright strikingly portrays Ilona Ritter and Steven Dao as the cad, Steven Kodaly. Ben Kiser is captivating as Mr. Marazczek and the Head Waiter, Matthew Fredrickson is the engaging Ladislav Sipos, with Marshall Petty, as Arpad, who will steal your heart as he did as Friedrich in The Sound of Music. There is a lively and talented ensemble singing and acting throughout the show.
